3 Ways To Keep Up Your Professional Skills
A recent Wall Street Journal article tells us that “the U.S. had more job openings this spring than unemployed Americans.” This is great news – not only are there more jobs to be had, but it’s an employee’s market. We have more choices about where to work and have options about the intangible benefits: more casual dress code, relaxed piercing and tattoo standards, and work-from-home options.
If employers are rethinking their approach to hiring, that means we – the employees – need to be constantly improving our skills. Many entrepreneurs aren’t required to do professional development like our lawyer or teacher friends are. Staying on top of your professional skills is something we have to proactively do.
Here are 3 ways to keep up your professional skills:
1. Attend conferences
Conferences are a great way to keep up with industry news while also meeting colleagues from all around the world. Plus, having access to the experts in your field in one location is never a bad thing.
2. Learn a new skill
Think about all the things you outsource: copywriting, bookkeeping, website design, graphic design, etc. Take the time to teach yourself a skill that will creatively challenge you but also give back to your business.
3. Teach what you know
Teaching ensures that you really know what you’re talking about. When you teach what you know, you are learning the material in a new way, and you’re making sure that you have multiple ways to explain yourself, making you the true subject-matter expert.
With 6 conference rooms and event spaces , there will be plenty of opportunities to attend a program that will teach you something new (i.e. lunch-n-learns, a speakers series, etc.). You’ll be learning all sorts of new skills and ideas from the people you sit next to on a daily basis.
Speaking at Bridge Space is a great opportunity to improve your professional skills, do a practice run on a speech, pitch an idea, or hone a presentation before you meet with a potentially major client. Not only are you more clearly articulating your expertise in your field, you are making yourself a better speaker, presenter, and communicator. Plus, you’re giving back to your community of peers is always a good thing.
